Mazatlán Trip Mar, 14th-23rd 1997

Introduction: I have been traveling to Mexico from El Paso by motorcycle on a regular basis for the past four years. My past trips have only been for 6 days and 5 nights with 2 nights in Mazatlán. This year I decided to spend more time in Mazatlán to get better aquainted with the city. The travel portion of this trip is typical of my past trips following the same route with the exception that the return trip has usually taken 3 days with different routes. [See the Feb 97 trip report for details of the trip portion.] This was my fifth trip to Mazatlan, the second this year. I will not write up my previous trips there, as they would all be very much the same. I have been trying to cover as many different roads in Mexico as possible.. My goal is to complete as many Mexican highways from end to end as possible as long as I am able to ride. I have completed all of Highways 5, 8, 10, 16, 23, 40 and most of 2, 420 miles of Hway 45, 350 miles of Hway 49, 147 miles of Hway 85 and 745 miles of Hway 15. I will write these up in later stories. I currently am 54 and plan on retiring to Mazatlán in the next year or so, and then will be able to travel further south and east from there. If anyone is planning to make this same trip, I will be glad to offer any advice that may be needed on tolls, gas, hotels etc. You may contact me at Mexico Bob .

Day One: El Paso, TX to Jimenez, MX [370 Miles.]
Friday:
Well, I got ready to leave on the morning of the 14th, found I had two nails in my rear tire and the casing was split (this tire was only 11 months old). So anyway I went to Team Mr. Honda/Yamaha/Suzuki and got a new tire ($228.00) installed and was on my way about 2:30pm. Rode to Jimenez, MX and spent the night.

Day Two: Jimenez, MX to Mazatlán, MX [500 Miles.]
Saturday:
Arose about 6:00 am, it is cool, about 45 deg F. Gased up and on the road by 6:45am. Got rained on outside of Durango, MX. The first 70 miles out of Durango towards Mazatlan have really gone to pot. Literaly full of potholes and in some places it is hard to even find any traces of pavement left. The last 80 miles is new pavement and a joy to drive. Got to Mazatlan about 5pm on Saturday. No rooms avaliable at the Tropicana, so went to the Sands and got a room for 7 days for a total cost of $152.00. Went to the Zone and had a great butterfly shrimp dinner and visited with Alberto, the owner. Just after I left in Feb. he had taken over operation of another bar, Harleys, about 3 doors down from The Shrimp Factory. It is called "Da House of Rock and Roll" and play all the good oldies. The band that was playing at "Tonys" on the corner when we were there is now playing 6 nights a week at Harleys. They start around 8:30pm and play till 1:00am. Happy hour (2X1) starts at 10pm till......?

Day 3-8 Mazatlán
Sunday-Friday: The guys from MO. that were on their motorcycles were still there! I went on some job searches and spent about 20 hours of the week talking to various people about job opportunities. Fridays,Saturdays and Sundays seem to be the busiest days. Monday is D E A D. It was in the high 70's and low 80's all week, with the lows at night about 69. It was great. Wednsday night it got real foggy. We had about 15 motorcycles meet at Harleys on wednsday night. On thursday, I went to visit a friend who owns a restaurant in the main part of town, and visited with him about 4 hours. Back to the room for a seista and then to the Zone for more night action. About 5 bikes showed up at Harleys. About 10:pm it started raining and the streets emptied out real quick. Not a person in sight, the were all in one of the bars or went home for the night. I waited for the rain to let up and then went to the room about 11pm. About 8 of the bike riders and myself had planned to ride to Guadalahara on Friday to a mororcycle rally going on there, but when it started raining they decided not to go. During the day on thursday I had gone to visit another friend from Montana (rides a Vulcan) who had been in Mazatlan since October, he bought a house in Mazatlan just last week for $28,000. It is a two story, 3 beadroom, 2 bath with a balcony just north of the Marina. Great views of the ocean and the mountians. I met him Friday night at Harleys and then we went around to some of the other bars. I called it a night about 1am since I was going to leave on Saturday to go back to El Paso.

Day Nine: Mazatlán, MX to Wilcox, AZ [900 Miles. ]
Saturday
Got up about 5:30 am and packed up the bike.

I made one last pass thru the Zona Dorada (Golden Zone) and went and gassed up the bike. On the way out out town I went by the the Marina and took the northern route out of town that connects with the toll road.

I left Mazatlan at 7am and rode for 17 hours and spent the night in Wilcox, AZ at 11:30pm.

Day Ten: Wilcox, AZ to El Paso, TX [220 Miles. ]
Sunday
I got up and left about 10am and made it home by 2pm.

PS I meet a woman who sells shooters at the Jungle Juice. She works about 4 hours a day and makes about $20.00 for the day. She gets 1 peso for each shooter she sells at 5 pesos apiece. She sells about 150 to 200 a night.
I talked to the desk clerk in Mazatlan, to see how much it costs him to live there. He has a family of 4. Tel. 77 pesos a month, utilities (elec, gas, water, trash) 47 pesos a month, food and other items misc. 800 pesos a month, rent 725 pesos a month. Total 1,649 pesos a month. At 7.8 to the US dollar, that is $211.41/month. for a family of four!!! At 5.40 to the Canadian dollar, that is $305.37/month!!! Think about it.
